Research and Development Engineer/Postdoctoral Researcher

Located in Norfolk, VA, Embody is pioneering the next generation of regenerative platforms for the repair of tendon and ligament injuries with novel collagen-based bio-fabrication techniques and products for the fast-growing sports medicine market. Founded in 2014 and funded with $20 million in DARPA & DOD funding, the company is developing unique biomaterials with an initial focus on orthopedic applications including foot & ankle, shoulder, and knee tendon and ligament repair.

Job Description:

The Research and Development Engineer/Postdoctoral Researcher will be responsible for independent and industry team-based research in advanced biomaterials and additive manufacturing for medical device and therapeutic development. This position will work closely with product development and manufacturing engineering to design and develop new collagen-based products and scalable production processes. They will also contribute to grant applications, execution, and reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform, analyze, interpret and present experiments independently and in a team
  • Lead and assist with physical, chemical, biological, and mechanical testing to support concept development, design verification, and/or process development
  • Lead and assist with the design, development, and scale-up of new bio-fabrication processes
  • Work cross-functionally to support New Product Development project teams
  • Create and prototype design concepts, generate engineering drawings and perform tolerance analyses of complex assemblies
  • Identify and mitigate design and product risks, generate risk management documentation
  • Plan and execute verification and validation activities, including developing and validating test methods
  • Explore and understand the root cause of technical problems and propose solutions
  • Lead grant applications, grant reports, and manuscript preparation
  • Contribute to intellectual property development
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels within the organization
  • Support all company initiatives as identified by management and in support of quality management systems (QMS) or other regulatory requirements

Experience and Skills:

  • BS or MS in Biomedical Engineering (or similar discipline) and a minimum of 2 years of experience in a laboratory environment or Ph.D. in a related field of study
  • Medical Device Research and Product Development experience preferred
  • Hands-on 3D printing/bioprinting experience preferred
  • Knowledge of MATLAB, Python and/or C++ preferred
  • CAD design experience preferred
  • Knowledge and practical application of FDA Quality System Regulations, ISO 13485, and Design Controls
  • Experience in the development, validation, and execution of test methods for design verification and validation preferred
  • Experience applying statistical techniques and analysis preferred
  • Travel Requirements: 10%
  • Ability to occasionally lift 35lbs
