Embody (Norfolk, VA), a progressive medical device company biofabricating the next generation of medical devices for soft tissue repair and regeneration, is recruiting a highly motivated, talented and enthusiastic engineer to join our dynamic R&D team. Job Overview:

The Product Development Engineer is primarily responsible for designing, building and testing novel medical devices and the manufacturing equipment necessary to create them. The engineer will lead the entire process including determining user needs, interfacing with vendors, maintaining revision control, and qualifying systems. A background in medical device product development, machine design and robotics would be ideal.

Job Description:

Product Development

  • Participates in design control per FDA 21 CFR Part 820
    • Contributes to graft design
    • Leads manufacturing development
    • Leads test protocols per ASTM/ISO standards, when applicable
    • Creates rationale 
    • Defines methods
    • Analyzes data 
    • Reports results in appropriate context
    • Makes conclusions and recommendations
    • Mechanical Design and Controls
    • Designs and draws parts with appropriate tolerancing in SolidWorks or equivalent software
    • Prepares and presents design reviews
    • Interfaces with vendors
    • Writes and/or directs machine control coding
    • Maintains timeline of machine builds 
    • Assembles and tests equipment 
    • Designs and conducts Installation, Operational, and Performance Qualifications

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Master’s is a benefit
  • Experience in an FDA regulated medical device environment is a benefit
  • 2 years of professional experience required
    2 years 3D CAD experience required
  • Experienced with motor controller programming
  • Good knowledge of manufacturing techniques
  • Able to apply a practical level of statistics
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work independently while handling multiple tasks 
  • Knowledge of anatomy and surgical procedures is a benefit
  • Proficient with MS Office
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50lbs
  • Valid driver’s license
